Patterns of Play

I am embarking on a new art project documenting the patterns of play created by my youngest son. My interest in this project stems from his difficulties with imaginative play. My son is known for lining up his toys, a red flag for the Autism Spectrum Disorder he is challenged with. In my new series, "Patterns of Play", I aim to slow down, reach his eye level and glimpse into his creativity. While I have no dispute with his diagnosis, the notion of what is consider imaginary seems limited by the neuro typical who have defined what proper play looks like. This is our collaboration. It should be noted that I never disrupt his setups.

You have us dead already..ummm?

It was a special gift for my children, as well as my husband & I, to have both sets of parents together on Cape Cod Bay. My little guys are incredibly blessed to have involved, loving grandparents. We as parents are eternally grateful for the ongoing guidance and support, particularly as our littlest guy has special needs and we have needed the chin up, give it to God speech more than once. I wanted to get a portrait of them all together to document this moment, but more for future generations to come. Well insert....your parents will cooperate even LESS than your children when making a photograph. I share the trio of images of them all to illustrate that not all images need to be poetic to matter.  No my mom would not put her drink down and thanks for that sarcastic peace sign, as I ineffectively try to offer guidance. It was clear she would have preferred not to have the photo taken. My mother in law continued to chat and the two pops...well they are just being the two pops and God forbid the conversation that no one wants to have of where and with whom will the kids be standing by. Do I prefer the other images in this post...sure. They make me feel boundless, but the traditional, albeit not particularly successful grandparent portrait will continue to evolve with meaning and this...this to me is the magic of photography. It is not a trick, pretty straightforward actually. When I shared the intent of the image for future generation there were snickers and snarls...you have us dead already lol.....ummmm, Photography always dances between life and death. I suppose this is one of the reason why I am fascinated by it. With that said I will make a note this year to get in the frame.

Public, Private and Secret

Small business and privacy in the age of social media...how does one balance this?
Jamie Kaminski Photography's first goal is to respect your privacy. My aim is to make images that YOU treasure for the rest of time. Do I want to blast them all over the Internet..OF COURSE  because I'm eXcited about your event and pictures...but pictures fundamentally are personal..they are for you. A wedding is really a wild event. Your making the most private of vows in a most public manner. I am always humbled by the trust placed in my hands to one capture, but two witness. I mean let's face I am the invited albeit hired stranger, with the tools that barrel down at you. I love witnessing those private moments of a whisper or the bride looking at her wedding ring for the first time. It's like a silent movie that only the bride and groom know the dialogue. It's a bit of magic, that secrets moments unfold in front of all the guests. I can tell you that this venue, Chateau Hathorn http://www.chateauhathorn.com/ was elegant, yet comfortable with a staff that was extremely polite and cheerful...and rest assured this is not an easy combination to find.  The food...well let's just say I hope I photograph here again...everything melted in my happy little mouth. To the bride and groom above, warm wishes and a heartfelt thank you!!

Trust

There are many things that I could reflect on, especially on Mother's Day. I could try and describe what unconditional love means or utterly fail at articulating how much more I understand and value my Mom, as a Mom myself now. However there is one lesson that motherhood has taught me that I wasn't prepared for. Trust. In a world where the media can glorify tales of horror and mistrust, or teen disrespectful rantings about teachers or sink hole chaos for Chr*st sake..my children have taught me trust. I trust myself more because of them, my intuition and my own energy. I trust others because I have to and so much good has come from it. I have learned to trust my boys with each milestone and I trust in working daily on this crazy thing called marriage. I trust in fate, but I see that as participating in the design of my life. Gavin and Quaid you can trust that I will ALWAYS love you....even when you wake me. I believe that the fruit of life is sweet not forbidden, so trust me my little men dive in there's so much good to taste. Happy Mother's Day ladies!

Just What Brothers do

For the first time, in what has to be years my husband and I woke up and neither one of our boys made their way into our bed around 5am like they usually do. I remember hearing my little one cry in the middle of the night, but unlike most nights I didn't rush in... I let him cry a little... even though I feared he would wake up his older brother on the top bunk. My husband and I raced into their rooms this morning with that nervous feeling of somethings wrong..you know what I am talking about. Much to our delight we found our oldest snuggling our youngest in the bottom bunk. When Gavin woke we asked if he heard Quaid cry in the middle of the night. He said, "Yes. So I climbed down and snuggled with him. I wanted to make him feel better. That's just what brothers do. " My big little man Gavin is something else I tell you. With all the crap autism spectrum disorders can dump on a family it does have its shining moments. This being a most recent example. Gavin has always been a love, but in learning about his brothers differences, Gavin has developed by fate, choice and design into a very caring six year old boy. I see him help often and I see how proud the spirit of giving gives him. It is an instrumental lesson that our quirky little family gives him. Just what brothers do.....can I lock that in a bottle forever?
